Cisco Catalyst 9300 integrates with Meraki for simple control using cloud-managed Catalyst switches in modern network environments.

IT leaders are facing constant pressure to modernize cloud-based network infrastructure. Whether your team is focused on supporting hybrid work, improving campus performance, or simply managing growing networks with fewer hands, the ability to simplify operations while maintaining enterprise-grade control is critical.

Cisco’s recent updates to the Cisco Catalyst 9300 series introduce a meaningful shift that directly addresses this challenge. For years, organizations have chosen for their rock-solid performance and IOS XE capabilities. Now, by integrating the trusted Cisco Catalyst 9300 hardware with the Meraki cloud management platform, Cisco is giving customers a new way to manage campus networks that is both powerful and accessible.

This change is more than a feature update. It reflects a broader evolution in Cisco’s approach to network management. One that prioritizes choice, operational clarity, and long-term investment protection. For IT decision-makers, the Meraki-managed Catalyst switches represent an opportunity to gain cloud control without giving up the foundation they’ve trusted for years.

Let’s unpack what this shift means, why it matters, and how WEI can help you make the right move forward.

Why This Matters: A Strategic Shift for Cisco

Historically, Cisco segmented its campus switching portfolio between two management ecosystems: Meraki and DNA Center (now Catalyst Center). While each platform offered distinct advantages, customers were effectively forced to choose their operational path early and stick to it. Moving between platforms wasn’t practical, and many organizations found themselves locked into a framework that no longer aligned with their needs.

Now Cisco is offering a new level of interoperability. Select Cisco Catalyst 9300 models can be onboarded directly into the Meraki dashboard. Customers can also purchase Cisco Catalyst 9300 hardware preloaded with Meraki software. This allows Meraki-based deployment right out of the box. This dual-management support marks a significant pivot in Cisco’s strategy and presents IT leaders with a practical way to align hardware choices with modern management preferences.

This is particularly important given the widespread preference for cloud-based network management. Meraki’s dashboard provides a single-pane-of-glass interface that simplifies configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting. For teams under pressure to do more with less, that simplicity is invaluable.

Watch: Inside WEI’s Unique Customer Approach

What’s Changing with Cisco Catalyst 9300

At its core, the Cisco Catalyst 9300 is still the powerhouse of Cisco’s enterprise access switching portfolio. It remains the industry’s leading fixed access switch, known for its performance, security, and investment longevity. What’s different is how customers can now manage it within a cloud-based network environment.

There are two key integration points:

  1. Meraki Monitoring for IOS XE Switches
Customers running IOS XE on Cisco Catalyst 9300 switches can now monitor their devices through the Meraki dashboard. This provides a centralized view of device health and status across both Meraki and Catalyst environments. While configuration must still be done through CLI or Catalyst Center, IT teams gain a unified operational view without needing to overhaul their current deployments.
  2. Meraki-Managed Catalyst SwitchesFor new deployments, Cisco Catalyst 9300 models can be provisioned to run Meraki software natively. These switches operate fully within the Meraki dashboard, with all the management capabilities users expect from traditional Meraki devices. This includes intuitive policy settings and integrated troubleshooting tools.

This dual-path approach preserves the option to transition at your own pace. Whether you want to gradually introduce Meraki management or go all-in with new Meraki-managed Catalyst switches, the decision is in your hands.

Why Customers Are Noticing

For many enterprise teams, the promise of the cloud isn’t just about offloading workloads, it’s about reducing friction. Meraki’s management model is popular for a reason. It minimizes configuration errors, reduces the learning curve for new staff, and improves responsiveness when issues arise.

With Cisco Catalyst 9300 now part of the Meraki ecosystem, the business case becomes even stronger:

  • Unified Management Across EnvironmentsOrganizations with both Meraki and Catalyst hardware can now bring those devices into a common dashboard. This simplifies oversight, accelerates troubleshooting, and reduces the cognitive load on network engineers managing multiple tools.
  • Reduced Operational OverheadThe Meraki dashboard’s intuitive workflows cut down on the time it takes to deploy and manage campus infrastructure. That means fewer misconfigurations, faster resolution of issues, and less need for highly specialized command-line knowledge.
  • Preservation of Hardware InvestmentsIf you already own Cisco Catalyst 9300 switches, you don’t have to rip and replace. You can begin by enabling monitoring within Meraki and determining whether full migration makes sense down the line. Cisco is offering flexibility without forcing an all-or-nothing decision.
  • Simplified Security and Compliance ManagementWith policies and security postures managed from a central interface, maintaining compliance across your access network becomes less complex. For regulated industries, this can significantly reduce risk and reporting burdens.

How WEI Helps You Make the Right Move

As with any technology shift, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some organizations will benefit from Meraki-managed Catalyst switches immediately. Others may prefer to start with Meraki monitoring while maintaining CLI-based control for more complex configurations. The right path depends on your team’s skills, business priorities, compliance requirements, and existing infrastructure.

That’s where WEI comes in.

We help our clients think through not just the technology itself but how it supports their broader operational goals. Our team works closely with your network architects and IT leaders to:

  • Evaluate your current switching infrastructure and determine Meraki compatibility
  • Plan for staged rollouts that align with project timelines and budget cycles
  • Provide side-by-side comparisons of Meraki versus Catalyst Center workflows
  • Address any policy, compliance, or security considerations when shifting management models
  • Deliver hands-on support during onboarding, policy creation, and team training

In short, we help you make the shift with clarity and confidence. Whether you’re exploring cloud-based management for the first time or ready to standardize on Meraki-managed Catalyst switches for your entire access layer, our team is here to guide the process from strategy through execution.

Considerations for Decision-Makers

Before making the leap, there are a few questions every IT leader should ask:

  • What is our current mix of Catalyst and Meraki hardware, and where are we going?
  • How does Meraki management align with our operational processes and skill sets?
  • Are there upcoming refresh cycles where a shift to Meraki-native Catalyst hardware would make sense?
  • What regulatory or internal security requirements must we account for when centralizing management?

These conversations are best had early and with expert guidance. The good news is that you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. WEI can help with your cloud-managed Catalyst switches.

Final Thoughts

Cisco’s integration of Cisco Catalyst 9300 hardware with the Meraki cloud is not a short-term play. It signals a deeper commitment to simplifying enterprise networking while protecting the investments customers have already made.

Read: Transform Enterprise Security With Advanced Network Access Control Solutions

The Fragmentation Problem In Healthcare IT

Healthcare IT environments are among the most demanding in any industry. The increasing number of electronic medical records, connected medical devices, telehealth platforms, and external partners expands the digital attack surface annually. Add in multi-site operations and thousands of endpoints, and maintaining control becomes difficult without the right architecture.

Unfortunately, many organizations still rely on a patchwork of security vendors and perimeter-based defenses. These legacy setups are increasingly difficult to manage. According to Gartner, are deploying innovations faster than they can secure them. For healthcare, where patient safety and trust are highly valuable, that gap carries a serious risk.

More organizations are simplifying their security stack to address this. Gartner projects that will actively pursue vendor consolidation strategies. A unified approach reduces complexity and costs, and improves the consistency of protection across the enterprise. This is precisely why implementing SASE in healthcare organizations is becoming a top priority.

Listen: Reviewing Fortinet Security Fabric, FortiGate Firewall

Why Unified SASE Matters

Unified SASE delivers network connectivity and advanced security services through a single cloud-delivered platform. It combines secure web gateways, cloud access security brokers, firewalls, and ZTNA into one system that is easier to manage and deploy.

For healthcare leaders, this brings several key advantages:

Weighing Your Options: SD-WAN Renewal or SASE Adoption?

Technology is constantly evolving, just like the business landscape it supports. This evolution may have prompted your organization to transition to SD-WAN years ago, as it offered significant advantages over MPLS at the time. However, with the rapid pace of innovation, it’s worth asking: Is SD-WAN still the right investment, or is it time to embrace the next generation of technology?

SD-WAN No Longer Cutting It

SD-WAN addressed many of the limitations of MPLS at the time, including high costs and limited scalability. But the world has changed since then and SD-WAN wasn’t designed for the following trends:

  • Cloud Adoption: Organizations have rapidly migrated to cloud services across all levels including software applications (SaaS) to infrastructure (IaaS) and development platforms (PaaS). This shift has redefined how businesses operate.
  • Remote Work: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift towards remote and hybrid work models that require secure access from anywhere.
  • Edge Computing: The rise of IoT and edge computing has brought data processing closer to its sources, fundamentally altering traditional network traffic patterns.

And then there’s the not-so-small subject of cybersecurity that cannot be ignored. While SD-WAN may excel at network optimization, it wasn’t designed to address sophisticated security challenges across distributed workforces, cloud services, and dynamic cyber threats. Its architecture was not designed for the integrated, comprehensive security that modern enterprises require without relying on multiple additional security solutions.

Yes, there was a time in which most traffic remained within the confines of the MPLS, but those days are gone. The fact is that modern IT environments today rely on cloud and Internet-bound traffic, thus requiring a comprehensive approach to protect data and resources across all network edges, from on-premises infrastructure to cloud applications and remote users.

Read: SASE - What Is It And Why Is It Needed?

SASE: The New Alternative to SD-WAN

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) offers a compelling alternative as it integrates SD-WAN, security, and remote access into a unified, global cloud service. Let’s face it, more independent systems mean more headaches, licenses, and management. simplifies infrastructure, lowers costs, and minimizes routine maintenance. As a result, organizations gain improved security, increased speed, and greater operational efficiency. Let’s look at some of the other ways that SASE stands out over SD-WAN.

Cloud Native

Cloud-native architecture, including SASE, offers significant advantages by reducing internal IT workloads as providers maintain and update their solutions. This approach extends several benefits to organizations:

  • SASE scales automatically through cloud infrastructure without adding hardware
  • New locations can be brought online in hours rather than weeks
  • Capacity adjusts dynamically to meet changing demands
  • Lower hardware investment requirements

Distributed Parity Across All Edges

As businesses shift resources and computing power to their edges to be closer to customers, traditional networking architectures have struggled to keep pace. These legacy approaches often required separate point solutions to handle SD-WAN, remote access and cloud accelerators.

SASE frees you from that approach as its architecture includes a full edge SD-WAN solution. A true SASE architecture fundamentally reimagines network connectivity by treating all access points equally, whether they’re physical offices, cloud resources, or individual users. This “all edges” approach delivers several key advantages:

  • Every connection point gets the same level of security and performance
  • Consistent policies apply automatically across all edges
  • Elimination of separate SD-WAN solutions for office locations
  • Reduced training requirements for IT staff

Streamlining Cross Border Operations

Many businesses extend far beyond regional hubs, branch offices, and international borders to serve an increasing number of global users. Implementing local SD-WAN solutions on the other side of the world introduced new challenges. While the global reach of a SASE provider will vary, those with the right global private backbone and necessary Points of Presence locations (PoPs) will:

  • Deliver consistent, low-latency performance worldwide through strategically placed Points of Presence (PoPs)
  • Provide local breakout points near major cloud providers for faster application access
  • Scale bandwidth dynamically based on regional needs
  • Support local compliance requirements through regional data processing

Future Proofing Your Network

Just as city planners must design infrastructure for the rapidly growing metropolis of tomorrow, IT managers must choose the appropriate architectures that will not only accommodate future business outcomes, but future technologies and trends. SASE architecture future proofs your enterprise by its ability to:

  • Accommodate new technologies without infrastructure overhaul
  • Reduce reliance on hardware that can become obsolete
  • Support geographic expansion without complexity
  • Adapt to changing traffic patterns

The cloud-native nature of SASE means your network infrastructure evolves alongside technology advances, much like a modern city that can adapt and grow to meet changing demands without requiring complete reconstruction.

Watch: How SASE Simplifies Network & IT Security

Key Factors in Your Decision-Making Process

The consideration of future-proofing your enterprise should be one of several factors when deciding whether to renew your SD-WAN licensing or begin a transition to SASE. Here are some additional considerations to evaluate as you make this decision:

  • Assess your organization’s reliance on cloud services and how it has changed since you first implemented your current SD-WAN solution. Because SASE offers optimized cloud access with reduced latency and improved application performance, it may be better aligned with a cloud-first strategy compared to SD-WAN.
  • Consider whether SD-WAN can continue to scale with your organization’s growth trajectory. SASE’s cloud-native architecture often scales without additional hardware investments for your expanding attack surface.
  • Evaluate the level of effort required to manage SD-WAN regarding location expansion and new security measures. SASE simplifies management by unifying networking and security into a single platform with centralized management.

While SASE offers real benefits over SD-WAN, you do need to carefully evaluate the associated costs and organizational readiness. There will be transition costs, and not every IT team can adapt to a cloud-native solution overnight. Given the complexity of such a transition, partnering with a trusted expert can make all the difference.

WEI has extensive experience guiding enterprises through secure, seamless SASE deployments, ensuring your organization maximizes the benefits while minimizing disruption. Our team of specialists can assess your unique needs and develop a tailored strategy that aligns with your security, networking, and business goals. If you’re considering the move to SASE, contact WEI today to explore how we can help simplify your transition.

Watch: WEI’s Unique Approach To Customer Success

One More Thing: Security

When it comes to IT, you cannot overemphasize security. Your business continuity and reputation depend on it. Security needs to be comprehensive and embedded in everything across your organization. Perhaps the greatest difference between SD-WAN and SASE is how they approach security. SD-WAN requires additional security solutions on top while SASE incorporates a comprehensive security stack directly into the network architecture, including built-in zero trust security principles. Its cloud native security ensures both consistent policy enforcement and reduced operational overhead regardless of location.

Conclusion

Just as your organization evolved from physical servers to virtualization and from on-premises data centers to cloud computing, it may be time to move beyond SD-WAN to SASE. While SD-WAN may have served its purpose well over the years, today’s cloud-first business strategies demand the integrated security and networking of SASE.

At WEI, we help enterprises modernize their network architecture with cutting-edge SASE solutions, ensuring security, scalability, and operational efficiency. Whether you’re in the early stages of evaluation or ready to deploy, our experts are here to guide you every step of the way. Reach out to WEI today to start your SASE transformation.

Next Steps: What do leading industry analysts really think about SASE, its benefits, use cases and long-term enterprise adoption? As you’ve probably guessed from reading the title, industry analysts have widespread regard for SASE, with Gartner estimating that 60% of enterprises will employ a SASE strategy by 2025. But why?

Smart data centers streamline operations, boost performance, and enhance security using advanced network strategy, automation, and Zero Trust principles.

Just as a city relies on infrastructure like roads, bridges, and utilities to connect its residents, ensure their safety, and foster productivity, data centers have become the critical foundation of modern digital operations. These facilities house essential systems and processes that keep businesses running smoothly.

Data centers require thoughtful design and advanced networking capabilities to support these critical functions. Smart planning, much like urban planning that enables a city to thrive, is crucial for ensuring smooth operations within a data center.

In this article, we’ll explore how proven urban planning principles apply to data center networking, and how organizations can create smarter data centers to meet current demands and prepare for future growth.

The Principles Of A Smart Data Center

A smart data center works similarly to a city’s traffic lights, using intelligent automation and integration to modernize operations and performance, while ensuring security. Security systems immediately detect and respond to threats, and utilities are optimized to conserve resources.

This “smart city” analogy highlights the benefits of advanced data center design and network strategies:

  • Improved operational efficiency: Automated systems reduce manual errors and improve coordination.
  • Enhanced performance: ֱ are allocated effectively to handle demand spikes.
  • Stronger security: protect sensitive data.

According to a , organizations using advanced data center networking technologies report up to 80% faster time to market for complex IT projects. This emphasizes the importance of a smart data center design that keeps up with modern demands.

To achieve this, there are five key principles of intelligent data center networking every organization should know for optimal performance and security. Let’s dive in.

1. Modernize With DPU-Enabled Switches

Traditional data centers rely on CPUs and GPUs to process demanding workloads, including big data analytics and AI. Recently, the increased adoption of data processing units (DPUs) plays an important role by offloading resource-intensive networking, security, and storage tasks. This shift enables CPUs to focus on core applications.

Think of DPUs as expressways in a city, directing high volumes of traffic to prevent congestion. These specialized processors manage tasks like:

  • Encryption and firewalling
  • High-speed telemetry for real-time insights
  • Load balancing and micro-segmentation

Much like urban planners optimize highways and toll booths to improve traffic flow, DPU-enabled switches optimize network strategies and reduce latency by processing data at wire speed, ensuring seamless communication across workloads. Unlike SmartNICs which require server-specific configurations, DPU-enabled switches integrate without modifying existing server hardware or software. This makes them adaptable for both new and existing data center designs.

2. Transition To A Distributed Services Architecture

A distributed services architecture ensures that networking and security functions are embedded directly into the data center fabric, rather than isolated in centralized locations. This model eliminates bottlenecks and improves accessibility by:

  • Embedding security and network functions close to workloads.
  • Simplifying infrastructure by consolidating services.
  • Supporting millions of tasks without slowing down operations.

Organizations adopting this approach align their network strategies with modern cloud-centric practices, like cities adapting to current urban planning principles to address growing populations and changing demands.

3. Extend Zero Trust Closer To Applications

Zero Trust is like your vigilant neighborhood watch. It assumes that every individual, or data packet, is a potential threat unless explicitly verified. Extending Zero Trust closer to applications provides:

  • Fine-grained micro-segmentation to protect sensitive areas.
  • Stateful traffic inspection to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Integrated policies that simplify compliance with regulations.

By embedding Zero Trust principles into top-of-rack switches, organizations can ensure that their equipment is always secure. One case study revealed that implementing a distributed services switch while improving performance tenfold. This highlights how adopting Zero Trust principles at the infrastructure level strengthens security and delivers substantial cost savings and performance gains.

4. Blend Network And Security AIOps

Good urban planning prioritizes efficient traffic flow, reliable access to services, and public safety. Similarly, combining network and security AIOps ensures communication, consistent monitoring, and dependable protection within data center networking.

Here’s how this approach transforms modern data center design and network strategy:

  • Visibility and accurate telemetry: Traditional methods rely on probes or agents, which only provide partial insights into network activity. This is similar to relying on outdated traffic signals to manage a growing city. With AIOps embedded directly into the data center fabric, telemetry becomes accurate and ubiquitous, eliminating blind spots and ensuring full visibility.
  • Troubleshooting for faster resolutions: Just as urban planners address congestion by analyzing traffic patterns, AIOps tools enable network teams to trace issues quickly. Detailed telemetry reduces mean-time-to-innocence (MTTI), helping identify root causes of application performance problems and improving overall operations.
  • Integration with security tools: AIOps solutions integrate with tools like XDR and SIEM/SOAR, much like modern city infrastructure incorporates smart systems for better coordination. This integration allows real-time anomaly detection, streamlining workflows and bolstering security measures.

Blending AIOps into data center design builds a resilient foundation, ensuring operations flow as smoothly as a well-planned city.

5. Leverage Edge And Hybrid Cloud Solutions

In the context of modern data center design, think about infrastructure the same way urban planners approach city layouts. A smart data center optimizes resources by integrating edge, colocation, and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) – similar to how a well-planned city balances residential, commercial, and industrial zones.

Here are key benefits to keep in mind when designing your data center:

  • Optimize workload placement: Place applications and workloads based on the location of data generation, whether at the edge or in colocation centers. The networking infrastructure must enable fast connectivity between locations.
  • Enhance connectivity: Colocation enables high-bandwidth, low-latency links to cloud and network providers, improving transaction speeds. Direct connections to business ecosystems further boost operational synergy. A colocation center paired with IaaS offers:
    • Single-tenant cloud-like experiences, maintaining control over data and applications
    • Low latency with direct cloud and network connections
    • Reduced egress charges, paying only for what’s used
    • Enhanced sustainability with energy-efficient practices
  • Adopt efficient consumption models: Pay-as-you-go IaaS eliminates overprovisioning and cuts costs, aligning IT investments with usage.

This approach is crucial as 90% of enterprise workloads are expected to run on hybrid cloud by 2027, supporting both business goals like sustainability and operational efficiency. Fourth-generation architectures take full advantage of the deployment options and consumption models offered by as-a-service and colocation data center services, empowering businesses to adapt and optimize their IT environments. By integrating these elements, companies can enhance their network strategy, ensuring a more interconnected and efficient infrastructure.

Final Thoughts

The shift from centralized to distributed data center networking requires architectures that unify infrastructure services and streamline deployment. Just as well-planned cities streamline infrastructure, strategic data center design ensures data flow, simplified management, and secure operations across distributed architectures. Modern, fourth-generation fabric designs now eliminate reliance on isolated hardware and complex configurations, which enables faster resource provisioning and enhanced performance without compromising security.

Explore the power of AI-driven networking solutions with HPE Aruba and unlock strategic advantages for your IT team.

Imagine this: you’re leading an important video conference presentation for a long-sought-after prospect. Suddenly, the call stutters, pixelates, and then drops entirely. To no fault of your own, your dynamite presentation and prepared notes are of no use as the prospect is left with a sour taste. This frustrating scenario, which many have experienced either during a virtual sales pitch or during internal team meetings, exposes the faults of a complex network environment.

Network growth, the increased usage of IoT devices, and evolving end-user behaviors are pushing traditional network management approaches to the limit. This leaves IT teams overloaded and struggling to keep up with day-to-day tasks.

Thankfully, are revolutionizing the way organizations manage networks. Let’s explore how it proactively supports and empowers IT personnel by tackling these common workload challenges.

The Burden Of Network Complexity

As our dependence on connections increases, network complexity becomes a growing challenge. This manifests in several ways:

  • Exponential Data Growth: Increasing data volume, applications, and mobile devices puts immense pressure on network capacity. This data surge creates bottlenecks, hindering network performance and overall functionality.
  • IoT Integration: The integration of IoT devices adds another layer of complication. Each device contributes to network traffic and requires specific configurations, further straining IT resources and management time.
  • Shifting User Behavior: User behavior is constantly evolving, demanding a network that adapts and delivers consistent performance. The rise of cloud-based applications, video conferencing, and bandwidth-intensive activities further strains traditional network infrastructure. Uptime is no longer the single measurement for network performance – it is the speed at which it delivers as well.

In turn, network administrators spend an inordinate amount of time on reactive troubleshooting, manually monitoring performance metrics, and configuring network settings. These tasks, while critical, are often repetitive and time-consuming, and leave little room for strategic planning and proactive initiatives. HPE leads the way toward a security-first approach with ready-to-use strategies and unique security solutions that are tailored for all types of businesses.

As a business owner, you’ve finally stepped into the digital world by setting up an online store or deploying a remote workforce model. Here’s the deal: going digital means you are prioritizing end-user flexibility, but how far up is cybersecurity on your list? Just like locking up your brick-and-mortar store or office at night, safeguarding all digital assets and user information stored in the cloud is critically important.

In today’s digital-first world, data breaches and complex cyber threats are present everywhere, making headlines on a regular basis. Organizations are now faced with a challenge: improve their data protection strategies while embracing the agility of hybrid cloud environments. In this article, we delve into the current threat landscape, explore how security is adapting to the cloud era, and identify a vision for a more secure future.

Understanding Cybersecurity Challenges

Cyberattacks are no longer isolated incidents. They’ve become increasingly sophisticated and often motivated by financial gain. Because they occur frequently, organizations now grapple with these three significant challenges:

  1. The Expanding Attack Surface: Cyber threats manifest in various forms, ranging from phishing emails to supply chain hacks, and it’s an ongoing battle to keep information safe. Picture this: at one of the largest tech companies’ security operations center, they prevent, detect, respond, and analyze an astounding . If this level of threat activity affects an established company , just imagine the challenges faced by others, including government organizations and local municipalities.
  2. Hybrid Cloud Challenges: Security must adapt as companies embrace hybrid cloud architectures. While the cloud offers flexibility and scalability, it also introduces risks. It is the responsibility of every individual within the company, not just the IT teams, to proactively implement measures for mitigating potential cyberattacks. Employee trainings on cyber awareness and implementing automated solutions within the SOC are just some of the many strategies enterprises are utilizing to better fortify their landscape inside and out.
  3. Closing The Experience Gap: There is a pressing demand for skilled professionals. Unfortunately, the scarcity of experienced staff poses a challenge for organizations in effectively countering cyber threats. Consequently, businesses must explore strategies to leverage their existing talent pool such as through academic partnerships and .

As organizations adopt cloud technologies, having scalable and adaptable defenses that can adapt is of utmost importance. In our exploration of the convergence between security and the edge-to-cloud continuum, let’s delve into how longtime WEI partner Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) defines the future of cybersecurity through their unique strategies.

Security As An Inherent Part Of Operations

For years, cybersecurity was often perceived as a necessary but unsexy piece to what IT offered an enterprise. Now, you would be hard-pressed to find a large enterprise where IT is not at the heart of business operations, efficiency, and reliability. More stakeholders are beginning to understand that cybersecurity must be part of a business strategy, because without a fortified security strategy and mindset, there is no business to have a strategy for. HPE has long understood this perspective. Let’s explore how they are turning this vision into reality to tackle contemporary cyber challenges:

  1. Developing A Shared Responsibility Model. Historically, security operated in silos: network security, application security, and data security were separate domains. However, as companies transition from edge to cloud, the traditional siloed approach is no longer sufficient. Enterprises must shift toward a shared responsibility model, where everyone – IT teams, developers, and end-users – plays a role in safeguarding data. A shared responsibility model becomes a more holistic paradigm, and HPE advocates for collaboration and transparency to build a robust security posture. Their commitment lies in ensuring a secure edge-to-cloud experience for all stakeholders.
  2. Addressing The Talent Conundrum. While hiring established cybersecurity talent remains a challenge due to high demand, relying solely on external hires isn’t the solution. Instead, companies should invest in their own talent pool. The HPE Cybersecurity Career Reboot program exemplifies this approach through continuous learning, offering upskilling opportunities, and nurturing internal talent.
    1. Upskilling And Reskilling: Encourage existing employees to acquire cybersecurity certifications through training programs and workshops.
    2. Cross-Functional Training: Foster collaboration and mutual understanding between developers and security professionals about security principles.
    3. Internship Programs: Nurturing young talent through university partnerships.
    4. Hackathons And Capture the Flag (CTF) Challenges: These hands-on events not only get the competitive juices flowing, but also help hone practical skills and promote a security-conscious culture.

Navigating modern challenges requires thinking outside the box. Organizations must carefully consider non-traditional approaches, acknowledge diverse skill sets, and develop untapped potential.

Building Security Resilience

Aside from integrating security approaches within business operations, the future demands a proactive stance.

As enterprises embark on edge-to-cloud transformations, the data security controls in stand out. Powered with HPE’s Zero Trust approach, user identity, device health, and access requests undergo various levels of verification regardless of their origin. The platform also boasts over 2,200 security controls to maintain data integrity and streamline operations in real-time. This risk-based, compliance-driven strategy ensures that security becomes a fundamental part of any business’s journey.

Final Thoughts

The edge-to-cloud journey demands a security-first mindset, and HPE’s strategies and solutions pave the way in making security principles intrinsic to organizations.

If your business is ready to take that step, it is important to look for a security partner who prioritizes and empowers diverse organizations, adheres to cybersecurity best practices, and has earned recognition for their work. Following in HPE’s footsteps, WEI champions a future-ready digital landscape through university partnerships, , staff augmentation assistance, and a comprehensive suite of security offerings. How to Connect & Protect for Zero Trust Security

Do you trust your network? Performance may be in an optimal place, and workplace operations are thankful for that. But what about security? “Zero Trust” is a practice every IT leader and decision maker should be educated on as more and more organizations have realized that all attacks don’t originate from the other side of the firewall. Attacks can be launched from anywhere, including within the network itself. Network administrators must always operate under the assumption that their network has already been breached. And sadly, for some reading this article, that may be the case.

Security Starts With Visibility

Think of the visibility that security teams require from fans entering a major sports arena. Attendees must successfully pass through a security detector while large purses, handbags or backpacks are not permitted. Usually, only fully transparent bags are allowed in. These transparent bags give security teams greater visibility into what fans are bringing into the arena, and that greater visibility is necessary when a small/limited team of security personnel is responsible for ensuring the safety of tens of thousands of fans. It may seem like a small detail to the average event goer, but it is a major guideline for security teams to leverage.

Similarly, IT security and networking leaders who are responsible for safeguarding campus networks require greater visibility, too. At all times, they must know the identities of all connected devices and the types of workloads and traffic that are traversing the network. They need to know who is accessing what and if access privileges are being respected or abused. Ideally, what campus network teams need is a way to authenticate every client that requests a connection and to continuously compare its configuration and status to a defined set of acceptable security states to ensure it will not introduce vulnerabilities or participate in an attack. As a bonus, the solution could be provided by a single vendor so the tools could operate as a united front.

Here is the good news: Such a solution is already available within the HPE Aruba Networking Edge Services Platform (ESP) security solutions portfolio. Let’s explore.

Identity Is Critical

According to a survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute that involved a cross section of more than 2,000 IT professionals, 45% of respondents believe Zero Trust is a theoretical framework that cannot be implemented. Additionally, only 27% of respondents are confident or very confident in their ability to know all users and devices connected to their networks at all times. These two findings correlate with one another because Zero Trust is completely unobtainable if you don’t know the identity of all devices on your network. Without identity, there is no trust.

No Identity – no access.

And we aren’t just talking about BYOD laptops, tablets, and phones. This applies to cameras, sensors, medical equipment and other undetected IoT devices. Zero Trust means having the visibility to know the identity of every device requesting a connection. Not most devices – all devices.

HPE Aruba Networking ClearPass Device Insight

There have been 802.1X solutions on the market for some time now. These solutions only allow authorized devices to connect to the network. However, their implementation process is labor intensive and time consuming. That’s not the case with ClearPass Device Insight. This cloud application performs a wide range of Zero Trust architecture techniques as it discovers and profiles all devices connected to the network in automated fashion.

This solution allows network administrators to discover, monitor, and automatically classify new and existing devices that connect to a network, thus eliminating the costly guesswork of what a device is in a DHCP address list. ClearPass gives you granular visibility into the attributes of every device including its type, vendor, hardware version, and behavior. This collective information helps your team create granular access policies to control these devices and reduce risk exposure introduced to the network. Once a device’s identity is confirmed, it is then authenticated every time it connects to the network.

Additional Components Of Zero Trust Security

Visibility, identity, and authentication are only part of the Zero Trust security equation. Here’s some additional elements to factor in:

  • Role-based Access Control (RBAC): Helps enforce the principle of least privilege so users are only granted the minimum level of access required to perform their duties. RBAC also allows organizations to segment their network and applications based on roles.
  • Conditional Monitoring: Continuously evaluates the trustworthiness of users and devices based on factors such as user behavior and device profile. It also uses advanced analytics and machine learning algorithms to identify anomalies and deviations from normal behavior patterns. Anything abnormal is deemed a potential risk and treated as such.
  • Enforcement and Response: Ensure that a detected anomaly or possible threat is acted upon and, if necessary, remediated before it has the chance to disrupt network and business operations.

Similar to ClearPass, the HPE Aruba Networking ESP solution suite provides components that achieve all these capabilities in a single packaged solution. The ESP solution suite includes:

  • Client Insights
  • ClearPass
  • Dynamic Segmentation
  • Policy Enforcement Firewall
  • Central NetConductor
  • 360 Security Exchange

Final Thoughts

Zero Trust security is not a theoretical framework or exercise. It is an achievable state that every campus network should strive for because it can, thanks to HPE Aruba Networking and its potent lineup of Zero Trust security solutions. Talk to a WEI Zero Trust security specialist to learn more.

Next Steps: Just about every business we talk with has long-term remote workforce initiatives, and security has become a larger focal point of each conversation because devices are no longer protected by the traditional enterprise perimeter. Don’t leave security to chance with your remote workforce.
