Learn why enterprises opt for managed data protection services over DIY for better security, compliance, and resilience.

Every day, I’m in conversations with IT leaders who are weighing how best to safeguard the information that fuels their business while meeting strict compliance requirements and preparing for the unexpected. The choice often comes down to managed backup versus in-house backup. I call DIY models. Enterprises can either rely solely on their IT staff or engage a trusted partner to deliver managed data protection services.

From my perspective at WEI, I see more organizations recognizing that data protection is not just a technical chore—it’s a strategic safeguard. The difference between a DIY model and managed data recovery services can determine how well an enterprise weathers outages, cyber incidents, or compliance audits.

The Limitations of In-House or DIY Models

On paper, managing backup and recovery internally sounds simple. Your IT team procures tools, configures policies, and monitors for issues. In practice, this approach often falls short.

  • Resource constraints: Enterprise backup systems require constant monitoring and validation. With IT staff stretched thin, consistency suffers.
  • Talent retention: Expertise in disaster recovery, compliance reporting, and enterprise backup as a service is difficult to hire and retain.
  • Reactive posture: Internal teams often respond only after failures occur instead of proactively planning for RTO/RPO improvement.
  • Hidden costs: Hardware refreshes, licensing renewals, and storage fees quickly erode savings. Outages introduce unplanned expenses and disrupt operations.

Too often, I see organizations confuse “having backups” with “having disaster recovery.” Backups simply store your data. Disaster recovery ensures you can quickly restore access and resume operations when the business is on the line. That gap is where DIY approaches often collapse.

What Managed Data Protection Brings to the Table

When enterprises move to managed data protection services, they gain more than operational coverage—they gain measurable business outcomes.

  • Improved Recovery Objectives: Managed solutions deliver quantifiable RTO and RPO improvements, minimizing downtime and data loss.
  • 24/7 Monitoring and Response: Service providers maintain continuous oversight so issues are detected and resolved before they disrupt operations.
  • Predictable Cost Model: Instead of unpredictable capital expenditures, enterprises gain cost consistency through service-based delivery.
  • Proactive Testing and Validation: Regular recovery testing and compliance checks guarantee systems perform when needed, something most DIY models never validate.
  • Strategic IT Focus: By offloading routine backup tasks, internal teams can focus on modernization and growth initiatives.

Compliance and Security Advantages

Another critical driver behind the shift away from DIY is compliance. Regulations across industries demand auditable controls for data handling, retention, and recovery. Meeting these obligations internally is resource-intensive and leaves room for error if processes aren’t consistent.

With a managed approach, enterprises gain:

  • Audit-ready reporting that simplifies reviews and reduces prep time.
  • Stronger security posture, with encryption, monitoring, and layered access controls reducing vulnerabilities.
  • Reduced exposure to human error, as automation and oversight ensure data reliability and integrity.

I often remind leaders: compliance auditors don’t want to hear that “the backup should work.” They want proof it will work.

According to the Ponemon Institute, the average cost of a data breach reached $4.45 million in 2023, the highest on record to date (). For leadership teams, this number underscores why reliable recovery is not just a technical safeguard but a financial imperative. Managed data protection services reduce the risk of extended downtime and failed audits by providing automation, continuous oversight, and audit-ready reporting, assurance that DIY models rarely deliver.

Why Enterprises Are Making the Shift

The decision to embrace managed data protection services is about more than outsourcing. It’s about confidence and resilience. Leaders want assurance that when systems fail, customer trust and business operations remain intact.

Enterprises that succeed are those that stop treating backup as a background task and start viewing it as a strategic safeguard. By moving away from DIY and investing in recovery-focused managed services, they ensure downtime is minimized and recovery is reliable.

The WEI Perspective

We see firsthand how managed data protection alleviates pressure on IT departments. By entrusting us with data recovery and protection, organizations free their teams to focus on transformation. Leadership gains confidence knowing critical assets are safeguarded by processes that deliver measurable results.

Enterprises cannot afford to treat data protection casually. Whether the challenge is passing an audit, recovering from a cyberattack, or strengthening recovery objectives, a managed approach provides assurance that DIY models rarely achieve.

My Final Thoughts

The choice between managed backup and in-house backup ultimately comes down to accountability and resilience. Managed services improve recovery objectives, provide compliance-ready documentation, and strengthen security while freeing IT staff to focus on innovation.

From my perspective, data protection is more than a technical safeguard. It is a cornerstone of enterprise risk management. It protects not only systems but also customer trust, brand reputation, and financial stability. With a managed approach, leadership gains confidence knowing they can demonstrate compliance during an audit, recover quickly during an incident, and assure the board that the organization is prepared for the unexpected.

That is why I confidently recommend managed data protection as the smarter and more strategic path forward. It addresses today’s risks while building the resilience enterprises will need in the years ahead. If you would like to learn more, please

WEI’s IT apprenticeship solutions deliver tailored training, mentorship, and real-world experience, bridging skills gaps and fostering diversity in tech.

The tech industry faces a dual challenge: a growing skills gap and a need for more diversity in technology roles. These unaddressed issues can hinder innovation and inclusivity across the sector. In response, WEI has developed its IT apprenticeship program tailored to early-career professionals from diverse backgrounds. This program bridges the technical skills gap and fosters a more inclusive workforce.

Let’s explore how WEI’s IT apprenticeship solutions stand out, ensuring participants and employers reap long-term benefits.

Building A Stronger IT Workforce

The demand for skilled IT professionals is outpacing supply. As cyber veteran Jeff Cassidy, Director of Cybersecurity Operations at CyberTrust Massachusetts, emphasized during a WEI Tech Talk podcast, “There’s an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 cyber job vacancies in Massachusetts alone.” Much of this demand stems from advancements in AI, machine learning, and other emerging technologies requiring specialized expertise.

Traditional hiring models often need to improve because they expect entry-level candidates to possess years of hands-on experience. WEI flips this script by designing a program integrating training, mentoring, and real-world applications. Greg Palmer, WEI’s Director of Technical Resourcing, explains, “Our apprenticeship model doesn’t just train individuals. It starts with understanding the client’s specific needs and then tailors the program to meet them.”

By addressing the skills gap with tailored training and practical experience, WEI empowers organizations to overcome hiring challenges and meet their technological demands. Some vital elements of WEI’s IT apprenticeship solutions include:

  1. Customized training plans: Apprentices receive training specific to the tools and technologies used by their assigned company. It is a direct experience for the apprentice as they are immersed in the client’s tech stack.
  2. Iterative learning: Training occurs in manageable phases, allowing participants to apply new skills on the job immediately. Valuable KPI’s are measured along the way to keep the apprentice on track and up to speed.
  3. Hands-on experience: Apprentices work alongside seasoned professionals, gaining practical experience bridging the gap between knowledge and ability.

This proactive approach prepares apprentices for immediate job success and ensures employers benefit from a workforce ready to tackle emerging technologies and critical tasks. This sets WEI apart as a leader in IT apprenticeship solutions.

Fostering Diversity And Inclusivity

While bridging the IT skills gap is critical, creating a more inclusive tech industry is equally essential. Diversity in the tech sector is seen as a business advantage, as companies with diverse teams often outperform their peers in innovation and decision-making. However, traditional recruitment strategies usually overlook talent from underrepresented groups. Minority owned, WEI’s commitment to diversity goes hand in hand with its innovative IT apprenticeship program to directly address this disparity.

The program welcomes individuals from various backgrounds, including:

  • Career changers seeking new opportunities in IT.
  • Military veterans transitioning to civilian roles.
  • Early-career professionals from underserved communities.

Palmer underscores the importance of diversity, stating, “WEI is a minority-owned enterprise. Our CEO is really passionate about ensuring we continue to pay it forward and focus on diversity initiatives where it makes sense. Our apprenticeship program reflects this commitment by focusing on candidates who bring unique perspectives and life experiences to the table.”

Jeff Cassidy adds, “The success of the program isn’t just about technical skills, it’s about creating a culture welcoming diverse backgrounds. This diversity enhances creativity and innovation in every organization.”

Ensuring Success For Apprentices And Employers

One of the standout features of WEI’s model is its focus on mutual success. The program equips apprentices with technical and cognitive skills and supports employers in integrating these new hires into their teams.

  1. Mentorship for apprentices and managers

Mentorship plays a pivotal role in the program’s success. Apprentices receive guidance to navigate their roles, while managers receive coaching on effectively supporting and developing junior talent.

“[As] most of these technical managers started as technical individual contributors, they are still very much technical individual contributors, and oftentimes don’t (A) have the skill or (B) have the time necessary to spend with those folks to get them where they need to be to get from that knowledge to skill,” explained Palmer. “You’re taking time away from those senior workers in the job already that should be contributing.”

“If we can shift that mindset so you’re not cannibalizing on your own productivity rates to train the new joiners coming into the job market, we can take that burden off of them so the company doesn’t lose momentum and you get skilled and knowledgeable workers at the same time,” he continued. This dual approach minimizes onboarding challenges and ensures a smooth transition for all parties.

  1. Tailored roles and measurable outcomes

Unlike one-size-fits-all boot camps, WEI’s program begins with identifying a specific role within the client organization. The curriculum is then designed to prepare apprentices for that role.

“In the course of the apprenticeship program, five years to date, we’ve put 150 individuals through the apprenticeship program and every single one of them has gotten the placement with the company they completed the apprenticeship with at the end,” Palmer said.

The WEI Apprenticeship Experience Is A Win-Win Solution

For companies, partnering with WEI means gaining access to skilled professionals ready to hit the ground running. Employers save both time and resources by eliminating the guesswork in hiring and reducing the time to productivity. For apprentices, the program provides a pathway to fulfilling careers in IT, backed by mentorship, real-world experience, and tailored training.

WEI’s IT apprenticeship program stands out for its ability to deliver tailored solutions to meet both the employer’s needs and the apprentice’s career goals:

  • Seamless transition to full-time roles: Apprentices enter their roles equipped with relevant experience, minimizing ramp-up time. Greg Palmer emphasized this point during the podcast: “Our model ensures apprentices are ready to contribute on day one, eliminating the costly gap between hiring and productivity.”
  • Support for niche and legacy technologies: WEI’s program fills critical gaps in areas often overlooked by traditional training models. For instance, mainframe computing and COBOL remain mission-critical in many industries. WEI trains apprentices to handle these technologies, helping organizations maintain operations while addressing workforce shortages in specialized areas.
  • Scalable for organizations of any size: WEI’s model adapts to unique needs, whether an organization has five IT employees or 500. By offering flexible program structures, even smaller organizations with limited resources can benefit from this innovative apprenticeship approach.

This program also provides substantial cost advantages for hiring organizations. Palmer noted, “With zero transition time between apprenticeship completion and full-time employment, companies save time and money while gaining workers uniquely prepared for their specific environments.”

Final Thoughts

Solving the skills and diversity gaps requires innovative approaches in today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape. WEI’s IT apprenticeship program is more than a training solution; it’s a comprehensive strategy for addressing workforce gaps, fostering diversity, and empowering organizations to thrive. With its focus on real-world application, tailored training, and mentorship, the program delivers unmatched results, including a 100% placement rate over the past five years.

Todd, who joined WEI in 2023, details his career journey within cybersecurity, WEI’s unique approach to developing next-gen cybersecurity solutions, and why the WEI culture was a major factor in joining the award-winning IT solutions provider. Below is a brief excerpt from the feature article.

Todd Humphreys: Keeping Pace With Cybersecurity’s Evolution And Focusing On What’s Next

In the dynamic cybersecurity industry, even the most seasoned experts agree that maintaining fluency in the latest products and solutions is a boundless task. The industry demands constant adaptability and a keen aptitude for new technologies to keep up with daily changes in cyber threats and best practices. Trending buzzwords and unproven solutions consistently flood the market, leaving enterprise IT leaders to wade through costly and potentially inadequate solutions. This is where WEI steps in.

The story of Todd Humphreys, WEI’s CyberSecurity Go-To-Market (GTM) Leader, demonstrates how a commitment to learning and adaptation can make a cybersecurity career profoundly rewarding in helping enterprise customers gain traction in cybersecurity. Starting in the network diagnostics field three decades ago, Todd’s career has evolved as much as the industry he calls home, leading him to his current role at WEI.

IT leaders recognize that cybersecurity is a never-ending battle where complex threat actors emerge globally every day. For many organizations, the latest unpatched vulnerability, a single click on a phishing email, or the stealthy attacks launched by a nation-state adversary are the common triggers for IT nightmares. A single cyber incident can result in lost revenue, decreased product/service delivery, and irreparable brand reputation damage.

Knowing this, WEI has developed a modern approach to cybersecurity that is designed to help customers effectively navigate and fortify themselves against evolving threats using the latest technology that is tightly integrated and designed to scale using automation, machine learning (ML), and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

For Todd, his longevity in the cybersecurity industry is built on a genuine desire to help businesses better protect themselves against modern cyber threat actors. Joining the WEI team in Fall 2023, Todd has articulated a clear message to enterprise IT leaders – focus on detection and prevention first. Borrowing from a US Military concept, known as “Left of Bang”, this cybersecurity mindset and strategy emphasizes a proactive approach to detecting and mitigating threats before they cause harm.

The WEI Podcast Is Coming To Apple And Spotify

You’re getting ready for the workday, whether it is going to be spent at home or in the work office. You eventually get to your desk and engage with emails, answer IT support tickets, and correspond with colleagues on the group chat. The busy start does not go without your favorite podcast, however. You pop in your ear buds and continue the podcast series that expands on whichever niche topic that interests you The episode holds your attention just enough to enable easy learning. Whatever the topic is, you are locked in and ready to support your IT team.

Does this scenario sound familiar? It should. 2021 served as a major springboard that lifted podcasts from a niche market to a mainstream media source. According to there are over 460 million podcast listeners globally with 75% of Americans at least aware of the term podcast. In fact, the United States is home to the most podcast listeners with more than 100 million active podcast listeners predicted for 2023.

The average listener will subscribe to a variety of niche subjects such as pet care, mental health, personal financing, backyard barbeque recipes, gardening, parenting hacks, and even homebrewing. Listeners can remain actively engaged without the use of a screen, thus allowing them to listen and learn while going for a walk or putting in desk time.

The platform is a great opportunity for advertisers to make their presence known, but the differences with broadcast radio in message delivery are staggering. Podcast hosts often read the promos, thus immersing themselves into the product/service and giving their own personal twist. This person-to-person messaging not only gives the featured product/service more credibility, but it also serves as a nice substitute to the standardized jingles and messaging delivered by someone completely unrelated to the podcast.

WEI Enters The Podcast Arena

WEI is excited to announce the launch of its first-ever podcast series, Publishing episodes weekly, the series will reprise the best conversations from recent virtual events. Despite all the changes in the global economy, WEI remains committed to providing quality customer service in the business technology field.

For over 30 years, WEI’s success has centered around customer relationships. We remain heavily invested in the success of our customers, and the engineering pedigree that we have attracted serves as a catalyst for why our customers continue to grow and prosper with our custom solutions. This is a recipe that recently earned WEI its third CRN Triple Crown Award, from prestigious

We don’t just innovate – we creatively innovate. From the initial assessment to solution deployment and ongoing monitoring, WEI’s award-winning formula puts your enterprise in a cost-effective position to succeed with real, tangible business outcomes. Award-winning differentiators include:

  • We provide free workshops around the calendar year for our customers in our state-of-the-art training facility.

Three-Time CRN Triple Crown Winner

Most recently, WEI was named as New Hampshire’s lone recipient of the 2022 CRN Triple Crown Award, and just one of six solution providers in New England to do so. This prestigious award reflects the incredible work of our team and comes during a period where many solution providers are facing either an acquisition or sizable restructure. This year, CRN placed WEI on the Tech Elite 250 List, Solution Provider 500 List, and Fast Growth 150 List to make us eligible for the Triple Crown for a third time.

News of this highly anticipated award came only days before Cradlepoint designated WEI as 5G for Enterprise Branch Specialization. While these awards mean a lot to our organization, they pale in comparison to the opportunities they have given us to provide our clients the solutions and services they need for their own success.

The IT Industry Is Growing And So Is WEI

  • Retaining A Large Bench Of Subject Matter Experts. We have not stopped hiring as we continue filling the gaps required to meet customer needs and align with industry trends.
  • Being A Stocking Reseller. The majority of VARs are reducing overhead costs by transitioning to a minimal-touch model known as drop shipping. Meanwhile, WEI maintains a large warehouse stocked with the items required for customer needs. This also helps to mitigate lead times.
  • Staff Augmentation. WEI has carefully crafted a flexible augmentation service that allows utilization of a vast pool of skilled technical resources from one day to one year. This cost-effective strategy simplifies the contracting process and offers you easy access to a broad range of technical skills that are getting harder to find.

Conclusion

As the IT industry continues to experience supply chain delays and enterprises everywhere are struggling to hire competent personnel to support their IT environment, WEI continues to prove itself as a top solutions provider. life-at-weiDid you know WEI is a great company to work for? In addition to providing standout technology solutions to our clients and partners, we also go above and beyond when taking care of our team members! We’re proud to share that WEI came in an impressive second place out of hundreds of entrants in our inaugural entry in prestigious 2017 Best Companies to Work For in NH list. The award honors our commitment to a great company culture that showcases respect, diversity, volunteerism, charity and community involvement. Read on to learn more!

A Culture of Wellness, Communication and Community

Not all workplaces look alike, but the great ones have several things in common. , “Business flourishes when management fosters an atmosphere of open communication. When you communicate with your employees, you gain valuable insights regarding the work atmosphere, such as learning about small problems before they can escalate.” Our culture at WEI is one of community, communication, wellness and happiness.

A Look at Our Employee Appreciation Programs

Our company has several programs in place that ensure our team members are being recognized, and appreciation for that recognition shows through the longevity of their tenures, which we are proud to say are more than double the national average! Our recognition programs include rewarding an “Employee of the Month” with a bonus and a special reserved parking spot. Team members are also eligible for quarterly and end of the year bonuses, and these have been given out for 108 consecutive quarters.

In addition, we strive to create a culture of lifelong learning; professional development is encouraged and recognized, with bonuses given for those who achieve career milestones or earn certifications in their field. We offer this through company-paid training. We also aim to provide healthy work-life balance; in workgroups that allow, flex time and flexible schedules are also common ways to recognize hard work.

Our robust employee appreciation activities make us stand out as a fantastic place to work. Monthly activities like movie screenings, trivia lunches, family cookouts and volunteer opportunities are very popular. Team members also dedicate company-sponsored time to building homes for Habitat for Humanity, mentoring at local schools, serving food at Lazarus House, and organizing food and clothing drives through our WEI StepsUp program.

Fostering Communication, Diversity and Inclusion

Our Founder and President, Belisario Rosas, puts it best when he says, “We strive to create a company culture that not only helps our customers succeed, but our employees and our greater community, as well. By empowering our employees with decision-making authority, and fostering a culture of open communication and diversity and acceptance, combined with a managerial open door policy, we see our team members staying at their jobs for longer and leading an improved quality of life. I thank each and every employee we have for making WEI not only a standout IT solution provider, but a great place to work, too.”

Our company is proud to employ a deep bench of Subject Matter Experts to help architect, design, and deploy IT products and services using a combination of manufacturers ranging from market leaders to emerging technology companies. Always emphasizing quality over quantity, we have won numerous awards for outstanding customer service, being a family owned business, providing excellent solutions and supply chain diversity.

Whether it’s through employee appreciation, diversity and inclusion, volunteerism, or community outreach, we are committed to making employee engagement and wellness a part of the very fabric of the WEI working life. And we think our team members can agree!

We’re honored to be named #2 in “” in 2017, and want to thank our team members for making WEI a great place to work. Want to know more? Find out what our employees have to say about Life at WEI and this recent recognition in the video below.

We’re pleased to announce we have been awarded the 2016 HPE US Partner of the Year award for VAR percentage growth by (HPE). This is the second time we’ve been honored with this distinction, and both times the honor has been based on percentage growth. HPE shared a blog post announcing the winners; view it here.

HPE’s 2016 Partner of the Year Awards

The HPE Partner of the Year 2016 awards recognize partners across all of their business groups, including the Enterprise Group, Software, HPE Financial Services and Alliances. A longtime collaborator with WEI, HPE honored 61 companies for their outstanding performance and accomplishments; the distinction showcases our commitment to our clients, customers and partners, all of which were integral to our continued growth and success throughout the years.

We’ve been a top-preforming HPE partner for more than 25 years. During this time, we have continuously delivered expertise and value to customers in the areas of convergence, hyperconvergence, software defined infrastructure and other emerging technologies designed to build stable and secure hybrid cloud environments. By partnering and collaborating with both HPE and customers, we have created enduring business relationships that guarantee success and stand the test of time.

Collaborative Technology Solutions

In 2016, we were able to displace a competitive platform by designing, deploying and supporting a flexible “Production on Demand” solution for a national SaaS provider utilizing HPE converged technology solutions for hybrid cloud. This cloud solution is 100 percent redundant, has millions of simultaneous users and has never had a minute of downtime. We have also led the New England HPE VAR community for three years in both storage and servers, and grown our overall HPE revenue number by 70 percent. We’re pleased to say we are on target to exceed that number again this year.

According to our Founder and President Belisario Rosas, “We are honored to have been acknowledged and to be named HPE Partner of the Year for VAR percentage growth, especially for the second time. At WEI, we are continually committed to providing the best, most for our clients and customers. By helping each client meet the needs of their enterprise through attention to detail and dedication to quality, we have seen a bulk of our business grow through referrals from satisfied clients.”

HPE is a partner-focused organization that is committed to the mutual growth of companies it works with through innovative, collaborative solutions, delivering valuable resources and networking. They have a large network of partners worldwide and continually provides powerful business outcomes that drive the growth and success of all. We are honored to have been distinguished as a VAR Growth Partner of the Year for the second time.

View the HPE Partner of the Year Awards in Their Blog Post

This year, HPE offered four Partner of the Year awards based on VAR Growth, VAR Revenue, Direct Market Reseller (DMR) and Distributor. The distinctions honor national enterprises in the technology space who have demonstrated standout service, increasing revenue and growth, and distribution of services.

We enjoy sharing about our recent media coverage with our clients and customers in addition to stories of our company’s history and business growth. Sramana Mitra from the One Million by One Million blog recently profiled our President and CEO Belisario Rosas about his journey to transform WEI into the company it is today. Many of the most talked-about sagas of technology entrepreneurs detail Asian or European innovators; Belisario is Latin American (from Lima, Peru), and Sramana Mitra recently shared his unique story in a 5-part interview series on the blog.

From Bootstrapping to $200 Million

After leaving a company that brokered and sold computer parts, Belisario started Worldcom Exchange Inc. He initially bootstrapped the business, but within several years experienced a jump in revenue that was credited in part to the Internet, yet mainly in communications. In the early days, WEI was using fax to communicatworld-map-tech.jpge with buyers and sellers.

An important year in the company’s history was 1992, when they began to invest in authorized relationships with computer technology manufacturers, allowing them to purchase as an authorized reseller. In addition to providing brokering services, WEI evolved to become an IT solutions provider that develops custom technology solutions for its customers, a hallmark of their current New England technology operations.

About WEI today

What started as Belisario’s dream has become a reality; WEI is now a top player in the IT channel, an expert in business technology improvement and helps clients optimize their environments and work efficiently. We work with customers to integrate corporate strategy, new technologies and their current IT environment into one company-wide model to increase utilization and efficiencies around their unique business processes.

Our clients benefit from services ranging from strategy to deployment, value-added services, onsite training, integration, testing labs and a commitment to quality. From solution design through implementation, our sales and technical teams remain focused on providing unwavering support throughout a project.
